Overview

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC) is the local council of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull in the West Midlands, England. It is a metropolitan district council, one of seven in the West Midlands and one of 36 in the metropolitan counties of England, and provides the majority of local government services in Solihull.

SMBC is an established Oracle customer, having previously used the Oracle EBS Suite of applications. To modernise and streamline its processes and reporting, SMBC decided to migrate to the Oracle Cloud (Fusion) Suite of Applications. 

Challenge

SMBC needed a training partner who would be able to train key business users in the creation and manipulation of reports and dashboards across Finance and HCM, rather than relying on the IT Department to generate Reports and Dashboards and to streamline the flow of information.

The users were of a mixed ability, with some being extremely proficient, other very new. These users were due to take over the responsibilities from IT in terms of building and maintaining reports for their key business streams.

Data Migration runs were being completed in parallel to the training activities, which made the creation of the supporting training assets very difficult to develop as well as being able to test fully that the dashboard and repots were populating as expected.

Approach

Following an in-depth consultation with the key sponsors, an approach was agreed. This involved initial familiarisation of the Oracle Cloud ERP and Oracle Cloud HCM system, the data and required reports/dashboards. A training delivery plan was developed and subsequently delivered over a period of time, to ensure delegates could absorb the learning. As we were training the teams with the use of the organisations data, the reports being created were making a lot of sense, therefore the outcome of the learning was easy to define.

Following the training, the dedicated Fudgelearn Trainer was then scheduled to deliver post training mentoring sessions with the trainees, to support their questions and to embed the learning.

Benefits

With such a mixed cohort, training has its challenges, but the social aspect of the learning was invaluable for the group to learn together. This supported with the on-going mentoring thereafter means all learners have been fully supported and can now create reports/dashboards as required without reliance on IT.

This has now freed up time for the IT team and empowered the business team to create much needed and timely analysis so that key business decisions can be made.
